WELBECK, Nottinghamshire. (2003) RH

Location: Off B6034, 4m SW of Worksop on the Ollerton road (use Exit 30, M1)  view map

Area: Midlands

Meeting(s): Grove & Rufford - Sunday, 02 March 2008

Course Summary: Undulating course with uphill run to 3 out, but not too testing. Turf on sand-based soil has been untouched for centuries; can be watered if necessary. Viewing good from area near the winning post. Superb parkland setting not usually accessible to the public with views of Welbeck Abbey, lake and the magnificent ancestral home of the Dukes of Portland (one of whom invented the horsebox and used it in great secrecy to take St Simon to land a coup in the Derby!). Official car entrance through long ornamental drive. Ample parking with good viewing on sloping ground above the course. A valuable addition to the Midlands courses and well worth a visit - Yorkshire trained horses regularly patronise the course. The racing surface was improved in 2007 with the resultant good entry and turn out.

Top Riders: G. Brewer 3, Mrs J. Dawson 3, L. Hicks 3, N. Kent 3
