19 May 2011 Welsh Star Edges Ahead In Young Horse Battle
by Paul Champion
Findlay's Find has edged ahead of rival Start Royal in what is proving to be an epic climax to the 2011 pointtopoint.co.uk Young Horse Award.
The Myfanwy Miles trained five-year-old's victory in the Ladies Open at Cothelstone on Wednesday night puts him four points ahead of Alan Hill's gelding, with both horses engaged to run again at the weekend.
Findlay's Find heads to the Gelligaer Farmers meeting at Lower Machen on Saturday with connections safe in the knowledge that a win would secure the award. Second or worse means that they will have to wait 24 hours for the results from Garthorpe to come through.
Only a win will be good enough for Start Royal in the Meynell & South Staffordshire Mixed Open - if he wins and Findlay's Find finishes second or worse, then the title will be his.
Welsh horses have dominated the pointtopoint.co.uk sponsored event over the past few years; Findlay's Find's handler Miles having won the title in 2007 and 2008 with the remarkable mare Lady Myfanwy. If Start Royal manages to regain the lead he held for virtually the whole season it will be the first time an English based horse has won since Southwestern five years ago.
The National trophy, plus thirteen extra awards for the individual Area winners, will all be presented at the annual PPORA Awards Luncheon at Stratford-on-Avon Racecourse on Friday May 27th. Full details of all of the awards can be found in our Top Performers section.
