The Volkswagen Touareg is the Title Sponsor of the 2007 Gentleman's Point-to-Point Open Championship - the largest amateur steeplechase in the UK. This is the second year of the Touareg's sponsorship of the Championship, after an exceptional first term in 2006. Last year, qualifiers from 28 qualifying race meets up and down the country were invited to compete in the National Final to compete for a total prize fund of £15,000 - the largest ever offered by a sponsor.
On May 15th 2006, at the historic Towcester Race Course, the well Gentleman's Open Final's 16 entrants produced a heavily contested championship race, eventually won by Vinnie Boy, ridden by Tom O'Brien.
The 2007 Volkswagen Touareg Point to Point National Championship
In 2007 the Volkswagen Touareg Gentleman's Open Championship has grown, to include 30 national qualifying races, which commenced on 31st December 2006 with the Cambridgeshire Harriers meeting at Cottenham. The national final will again be staged at Towcester Racecourse on Monday (evening) 14 May 2007, with the championship winner receiving £10,000. Furthermore, if the winning horse qualifies through one of the sponsored qualifiers Volkswagen will award a bonus of £5,000.
Touareg Supports National Qualifiers
At each of the National Qualifiers, Volkswagen Touaregs will be provided to all race officials and vets to assists in creating an exciting and successful day of racing. With its combination of on and off-road credentials, impressive towing capacity and off-road capability, the Touareg is the perfect vehicle for the Point-to-Point Championship, be it for officials, spectators or competitors.
Off Road Technologies
The Touareg offers an impressive list of off-road technologies, including:
- Low and high gear ratios,
- Electronic traction control linked to an auto-locking centre differential,
- Hill start and descent assist
- 4XMOTION, which supplies power to those wheels which are in contact with the terrain, even supplying 100% of torque to just one wheel if required!
With these and many more impressive technologies, the Touareg is able to climb hills of up to 45degrees, wade through ½ metre of water (580mm with optional air suspension) and tow loads of up to 3.5tonnes.
The 2007 new Touareg
March 2007 sees the launch of the new Touareg, which features both a new design and an enhanced array of technologies. The new model offers a stunning new chrome grille, redesigned headlights and modified spoilers and exhausts. The Touareg is now even safer to drive, featuring Anti-Rollover Protection (ARP) and ABS Plus which cuts braking distances on rough surfaces by up to 20%.
A choice of four engines is available (three diesel and one petrol) ranging from the 2.5 TDI up to the immensely powerful V10 TDI, offering 313PS and 750Nm of torque - the same engine which enabled the Touareg to tow a 747 Jumbo Jet in November 2006!
