Former point-to-point trainer Pat Hanly has died following a work-related incident.

Hanly (pictured above) who sent out 11 winners, saddled his final runner in 2017, but was still involved with horses in a breaking and pre-training capacity from a yard at Mortimer Forest near Ludlow in Shropshire. However, it was while carrying out his duties as an electricity worker that he suffered the fatal injury.

A statement from National Grid Electricity Distribution said: “We are devastated that one of our colleagues very sadly lost their life in an incident on site on Wednesday morning.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting the family and colleagues of the individual and we ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“We are working closely with the police and Health and Safety Executive as they carry out their investigations.”

Hanly, 52, trained a small string of pointers and saddled The Rubber Man and Carbon Emission to win three races each. He also assisted owner/trainer/breeder John Needham.

He recently celebrated his 24th wedding anniversary with wife Alison, the couple being parents to Niamh and Liam.
